Amateur standout Daniel “Chucky” Barrera of Rancho Cucamonga Ca. made a statement in the first round of 2018 Jr Olympic Prep Nationals in Charleston West Virginia. In the opening day of the tournament Chucky faced Ohio native Cruz Lugo. The fight lasted all but 30 seconds of the first round with Chucky wanting to send a clear message to all his future opponents that he is here to win. Among the boxers competing in 108 lb Youth division there are four boxers ranked in the top 10 in the United States with Chucky leading the pack. A devastating left hook to the body sent Lugo down and forcing the referee to waive off the bout.
Barrera who is a multiple National Champion has been another product of the Warzone Boxing Club making him the 19th National Champion. Friday he will take on number 6 ranked amateur in the US Jose Nieves, of Avenel New Jersey stated head coach Al Franco. Chucky is ready mentally and physically, we are anticipating a tough fight against Nievies who is ranked for a reason. This will be a good match that will let us know what we need to improve on win or lose. You always want to take something back to the drawing board and make better even in victory stated coach Al.
Jose Neives who fought also in the first round beating Kentavias Slay of Mesquite Texas in a narrow 3-2 decision, is a slick southpaw who should make this a very competitive match. Chucky has never faced Neives before bu he did beat Slay in the 2018 Silver Gloves Nationals in Kansas City via UD. This fight will be shown on US Boxing’s website and you can follow a link for this must watch match of two excellent boxers.
